InMarch of 2000, PPL Electric Utilities
Corporation contracted with Potteiger-Raintree, Inc.
to complete a time critical roof replacement project
of the nuclear Turbine Building at the Susquehanna Steam
Electric Station in Berwick, Pennsylvania.
This project was to be a two (2) year
phased project that defined "fast-track" construction.
It required an immediate start, extremely short duration
and a time critical completion date. |

- Building is 130' in height. Access for
employees was via a freestanding 140' tall stair tower.
All debris removal and all new materials were hoisted to
the roof by a 110 ton crane.
- Existing 20+ year old coal tar pitch
built-up roof system was removed.
- New 20 year warrantied coal tar pitch
built-up roof system was installed.

- We were required to mobilize 25-30 men
for nuclear, safety and security/site access training within
one week after receiving contracts:
- In order to keep our existing roofing
projects manned, fellow TectaAmerica member GRS/Greenberg
Roofing was able to provide additional manpower needed for
this project.
- Included a complete FBI 5 year criminal
background investigation on each employee.
- Included a 10 panel pre-job drug test
for all employees.
- Included physiological testing for pre-qualification.
- Work could only be completed during Outage.
There would be no option for completion time extension.
- Over 50% of available work days were
lost due to snow, rain and high winds.
- Odor issues necessitated moving the asphalt
and coal tar pitch kettles 200 yards away from crane hoisting
area.
- Security precautions required that
each item of new roofing material was x-rayed or individually
hand inspected by security guards.
| Each phase of this fast track project
was completed on time and within budget with over 108,000
SQ FT of re-roofing completed within a total of 32 working
days. This work was finished despite the unique conditions
of problematic site access conditions, prohibitive security
measures, stringent nuclear safety criteria, extensive
training requirements and inclement weather. |
